Card limits, rewards rates and fees are set out in the product summary you receive before you apply. Credit is subject to status and affordability.
Two cards, one account
Every personal account comes with a contactless debit card. A rewards credit card can be added once your account is open and your affordability has been assessed.
| Debit card | Credit card | |
|---|---|---|
| Comes with the account | Yes, issued on opening | Applied for separately |
| Spends from | Your available balance | An agreed credit limit |
| Contactless limit | Set by you, up to the scheme maximum | Set by you, up to the scheme maximum |
| Foreign transactions | No fee on Elite Plus and Prestige | No fee on Prestige |
| Cash withdrawals | Free at in-network machines | Charged at the cash advance rate from day one |
| Rewards | None | Cashback on eligible spend |
Virtual card first
Your card details appear in online banking as soon as the account opens, so you can add the card to your phone wallet and start paying before the plastic arrives.
Controls you hold yourself
Everything below is a switch inside online banking. None of it requires a phone call, and every change takes effect on the next transaction.
- Freeze and unfreeze
- Lock the card instantly if it is misplaced. Nothing is cancelled, so unfreeze it when the card turns up and carry on.
- Spending limits
- Set your own daily limits for purchases, contactless and cash, lower than the account maximum.
- Location and channel rules
- Turn off online payments, foreign payments, cash withdrawals or contactless independently of each other.
- Merchant blocks
- Block categories you never intend to use, such as gambling. A block takes effect immediately and can be lifted after a cooling-off period.
- PIN management
- View your PIN in online banking, or change it at any in-network machine.
- Replace a card
- Order a replacement yourself. The old card is cancelled the moment the new one is activated.
If something goes wrong
You see a payment you do not recognise
Freeze the card in online banking first. That stops anything further while you look into it.
Check the merchant name
Many disputes turn out to be a trading name you do not recognise rather than fraud. The transaction detail shows the merchant, location and date.
Raise a dispute
Report it from the transaction itself. You will be asked what happened and whether you still hold the card.
We investigate
Where the transaction is unauthorised and you have not acted fraudulently or with gross negligence, you are not liable for the loss.
Outcome
We tell you what we found and what happens next. If you disagree, our complaints process is open to you.
We will never ask you to move money
No one from this bank will ever ask you to transfer money to a "safe account", read out a full PIN, or install remote-access software. A caller who does is not us. Hang up and report it.
Using your card abroad
- You do not need to tell us you are travelling. The card works wherever the scheme is accepted.
- Always choose to be charged in the local currency. Paying in your home currency lets the merchant set the exchange rate, and it is rarely in your favour.
- Foreign transaction fees depend on your account tier. Prestige has none, worldwide.
- Cash machine operators may add their own charge. It is shown on screen before you confirm.
Getting your card
- 1Open a personal account. Your debit card is ordered automatically.
- 2Activate the virtual card in online banking and add it to your phone wallet the same day.
- 3The physical card arrives separately from the PIN, for security.
- 4Apply for the credit card from inside online banking once the account is open.
